Prosthetics Dad

Don Colwell Sr.

Technical Sergent, Don Colwell, was hit by enemy aircraft fire on April 15th, 1943.  Dad was seriously wounded in action in the North African Arena.  The extent of his wounds, were a left hand and arm wounds, as well as a severe wound to his right leg, that resulted in an above the knee amputation.  On May 10, 1943 Dad was back in the United States, at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. for rehabilitation.  He returned to Glendale, California in August of 1943, fully recovered from his battle injuries, and with his new Prothesis.  He started working at United States manufacturing, making prosthetic components.

In 1955, Dad accepted a teaching position at UCLA in their Prosthetic Education Program.  In 1962, Dad became one of the founders of Orthomedics.  The company grew tremendously, and eventually had 24 offices in the Southern California area.  His legacy still continues with Don Jr., a practitioner in Sacramento, California.  Dads youngest son Steve, is in private practice in Kenmore, Washington.
